We all had teachers in our lives who helped us become the person we are today. Our last post in this series focuses on how just one person can make a difference. Maybe you could save that special teacher a trip to the grocery store with a CobornsDelivers gift card (Just sayin’)!
A High School Teacher to Remember
During a get-together with my friends last week, some moms shared a few stories about great teachers who had served as great mentors for their children. It reminded me once again that teachers carry an enormous responsibility on their shoulders. Both kids and parents look to them for learning, guidance, mentorship and direction.
While my daughter has been a good student and a hard worker throughout high school, she has never been one to call much attention to herself. But her 10th grade sociology teacher, Mr. Gordon, saw something special in Kelsey in the sea of high school faces. He noticed that Kelsey seemed a little lost, and that she was putting on this air of coolness in order to fit in with a particular group of girls. He pulled her aside on several occasions to simply get to know her.
He took the time to help her see that she didn’t have to be someone else to fit in – being HER was more than good enough. “He saw something in me that I didn’t know that I had in me at the time,” she says now. “He was so caring and kind and he made me feel that I really mattered.”
I’m not sure that Mr. Gordon knows what he did for Kelsey and how his act of kindness became a defining moment for her (she really started seeing herself in a different light). And to me, that is the beauty of a good teacher — acting on instinct while changing lives. Thank you Mr. Gordon!
