Have you been to the apple orchard this fall? Are you tired of applesauce, apple crisp and apple pie as you try to use all those apples up? Or have you been tempted by the bags of luscious ripe red apples that are perfectly in season but are daunted by the task of cooking with them?
My college-age niece was having friends over for a fun fall party with a clever theme — a “Caramel Apple Bar” – and I found the idea just too tempting to resist.
The concept is similar to a Sundae Bar, and would be great for a crowd or small gathering this fall. Rather than melting chocolate in your fondue pot, melt caramel instead. Then cut up apples – use plenty of varieties (check the CobornsDelivers “Best Produce” tab to see which apples are the best right now if you aren’t sure) — and place them in a big bowl with skewers on the side. Or if you are a purist, leave them whole and place a popsicle stick in the middle. Dip into the caramel and put out bowls of delectable toppings for dipping or sprinkling including crushed M&M’s, chopped peanuts or pecans, colored jimmies, pieces of graham crackers, Reeses pieces, mini chocolate chips, or even crunched up potato chips or pretzels. Whatever toppings you think of are fair game and the list is endless; after all this is your caramel apple dream, so make it come true!
And don’t forget the napkins, you’ll need them….
