In case you haven’t heard, the PGA Championship is underway at Hazeltine National Golf Club right now. To celebrate this major sporting event right in our backyard, I thought it would be fun to match up some of the favorites with cuisine from their home state/country. So, whether you’re a Tiger, Sergio or Padraig fan, I’ve come up with some dining options for you.
Tiger – The most recognizable golfer (and probably the most recognizable athlete) in the world, Tiger Woods’ favorite food is a cheeseburger. (This is according to my reliable sources: Google.) And because he’s a Californian, I’m going to assume that he likes his cheeseburgers California-style, with lettuce, tomato and mayo. So, if you’re rooting for Tiger this week, throw some burgers on the grill.
Padraig – Last year’s PGA champ, Padraig Harrington hails from Ireland. It may not feel like stew weather, but a nice pot of Irish stew in the slow cooker followed by pint of Guinness on Sunday during the final round of play may be the perfect meal if Paddy’s your guy.
Sergio – Even though he hasn’t won a major yet, Sergio Garciais considered one of the best and most exciting golfers on the tour. Plus, he’s from Spain…and washing down paella with fruity sangria is a perfect, summery way to cheer on El Nino.
Stewart – Stewart Cink, the winner of the British Open, is a Georgia native, so I’m assigning dessert for him: peach cobbler. Yum!
Ryo – At 17, Ryo Ishikawa is the youngest player on record to play in the PGA Championship, but is already one of Japan’s most popular golfers. Enjoy some sushi while checking out the phenom who’s known in Japan as “the next Tiger Woods.”
Freddy – Seattle native Fred Couples has become quite a fan favorite at Hazeltine this week. And you can’t think of Seattle without thinking Starbucks and fresh salmon. As you watch those morning tee times, brew yourself a cup of Starbucks coffee and get yourself ready to grill that salmon in time to watch the closing holes.
Tom – I couldn’t leave out our hometown hero, Tom Lehman! For him, pair wild rice salad with a local brew: Summit or Surly — a great combination when cheering on our local fave.
Eat well and enjoy some great championship golf!
